Skype Security Vulnerabilities Exposed PDF  | Print |  E-mail

The Skype VoIP software official website says that users form a community, a community you might not necessarily want to be a part of. Even when the application is closed Skype remains active in the background consuming precious bandwidth. Installing Skype turns the private user computer into an intersection through which all other Skype users may network.

Monty Bennerman, Verso Technologies CEO, said they have calculated that nearly 60% of organizations bandwidth is taken up by Peer 2 Peer software such as Skype. Another, even more critical implication lays in the fact that Skype can also be used for file transfer. Any file traveling the Skype community is exposed to potential theft and malicious exploit.

This argument was raised by Avi Wiess of Telecom Weekly, who applied to eBay, Skype and their shareholders but no response has yet been given other than we are checking it out. Meanwhile Skype users might be exploited or exposed to privacy violation but continue to enjoy cheap or free phone calls at excellent sound quality.
